Organic flow battery
a key technology for the energy transition

Research and development

In CMBlu’s laboratories a team of scientists researches, synthesizes and enhances these high-performance molecules, which are used for energy storage purposes. Molecules are developed to meet specific customer requirements by making targeted modifications and by incorporating functional groups. Storage capability, stability, solubility and cycle stability are determined using a broad spectrum of analytical methods.

Product development

For product development purposes an interdisciplinary team of engineers, design engineers, production experts and scientists creates an integrated overall system including electrodes, diaphragms, pipework, power electronics, battery and energy management units. This process sees a range of different disciplines, such as material technology, surface technology, electrochemistry, integrated circuit packaging as well as measurement and control technology being merged to create a high-tech product.

Testing and validation

The next generations of electrolytes as well as the requisite electrode materials and operating parameters are tested around the clock at 64 lab test rigs in the world’s largest organic flow battery testing laboratory. Upscaling is conducted at further test rigs of different sizes. The components are validated at 1:1-scale test rigs, while synthesis routes are scaled at the technical center.

Manufacturing

Stack production is conceptually designed and managed by CMBlu. A CO2-neutral upscaling facility on a greenfield site is planned. Machinery and equipment as well as quality testing facilities have been installed in Alzenau. Well-known stack component suppliers are integrated in the supply chain.
